Julis Rosenwald, the son of German Jewish immigrants and the president of Sears, Roebuck and Company, established a fund to help address the segregated education system for African American children. The Rosenwald Schools were schools built for African Americans in the South during the Jim Crow era. In combination with the Rosenwald Fund, the schools were funded with public funds and donations.
